The Rehabilitation Journey at Back to Bounce
We all value the ability to be able to move freely, with confidence and ease. As humans, we seek pain free, independent movement in order to be able to participate in the activities that are important to us. For some, this means playing with their kids or grandkids in the backyard, for others it is about competing at a state or national level in their sport. When health conditions, joint pain, muscle aches, or injury restrict our ability to do these things, it can have negative consequences for mental health and overall well being.
At Back to Bounce Sports Physiotherapy and Exercise Physiology, rehabilitation is more than just recovery from injury. Our aim is to help you move better and feel more confident and empowered throughout your journey. We focus on long term solutions, preventative care and helping you be your best, with support and guidance from our expert team of health practitioners. These stages take you from recovery through to return to function and freedom, in order for you to be able to continue doing the things that bring you happiness and fulfillment. At Back to Bounce, our approach isn’t about quick fixes or recipe-based treatments, but a deep dive into why and how. Why an injury may have occurred, and how we can address these aspects through long term solutions.
In this blog we’ll take a look at the injury rehabilitation journey at Back to Bounce Sports Physiotherapy and Exercise Physiology; from your initial visit through to the day you graduate and no longer need us. We understand that not everyone’s journey is straightforward; each person’s story is individual to them so keep this in mind when reading this blog, and as usual, be guided by your treating healthcare practitioner who is the best to give advice about your unique rehabilitation journey.
So let’s dive in, you’ve made the appointment, you’ve made your way to Mooloolaba to our exciting new headquarters, what can you expect?
Initial Consultation
When you first come to see us at Back to Bounce, we play special attention and take time to listen to your story and perform a thorough assessment to ensure we correctly diagnose the problem. We ask many questions to get a deep understanding of what has led you to be in the physiotherapy rooms, what activities you want to get back to and what’s important to you.
We discuss treatment options, expected outcomes, likely timeframes and set some goals together. Here we do some problem solving to understand why the injury or pain may have occurred, how we can effectively treat it and how to prevent future incidence. Our team of highly skilled practitioners investigate other contributing factors which may also be influencing pain or dysfunction. (For example, how your office chair may be affecting your neck pain and what adjustments you can make to help speed up recovery). We discuss load management, helpful advice and tips and what you can expect the rehabilitation journey to look like.
If relevant, we conduct a VALD assessment (learn more about this technology here) which gives critical insights into strength differences, compensations and movement patterns. For all the runners out there, we also offer a specific Running Assessment package where we take a deeper dive and look at strength, biomechanics, load and discuss your individual results in order to provide effective advice and individualised strategies.
Finally, we set you up with a treatment plan outlining all of the points we’ve discussed and also any exercises we recommend to begin with. Usually, we expect to see our clients for a follow up session one week following their initial consultation. However, in the case of an acute sports injury or something that requires further physiotherapy input, this could mean a follow up session in a few days.
Follow Up Consultations
In our follow up sessions, we provide information and education about your injury, what to do and when/how to progress back to your favourite activities. We use hands-on manual therapy to help relieve pain, ease joint stiffness or muscle tension. The amount of these depends on the type of injury, complexity and urgency. We prescribe a targeted exercise program, designed to address specific impairments, based on your individual assessment. In the instance that an individual requires surgery or further input from other medical practitioners, we ensure effective communication with your doctors and/or specialist to ensure you are gaining comprehensive team care.
Movement Education
One thing we are passionate about at Back to Bounce is using exercise as medicine to treat a range of pains, aches and injuries. An individually designed therapeutic exercise program is an important component of our treatment plan and your rehabilitation journey with us. We consider how different areas of the body such as soft tissues, joints, muscles and the nervous system all work together and how exercises may improve or encourage optimal movement and ease tension and pain.
With our fully equipped rehabilitation gym, we have everything you need for a comprehensive exercise program. We send you home with comprehensive video tutorials so you know exactly how to do the exercises at home. For those who need ongoing support or 1:1 sessions or group classes, we also offer exercise physiology services with our superstar Jess Radford. Jess is highly experienced exercise physiologist and is passionate about helping her patients achieve results and long term solutions.
